I disagreed about opinion shouldn’t assign tag for edges or faces. My opinion is: Yes, but carefully.

If you follow that rule, you may miss one of the most powerful features of SketchUp in making construction drawings.
Only faces assign tag can help you positioning a texture (UV Map) exact at the postion you want (by adjust UV Map of a same size texuture when switch off “Color by tag”). This is very important in making Construction Drawings with SketchUp, for example: define the coordinate for tiling of a floor. Tag for group/component can’t do that.
About the management, there is many simple plugins if you want to bring all edges & faces back to default in few clicks.
