They are old even before the disk was changed so you are stuck with doing the trouble shooting as the system stands. You may try F11 when your machine boots to see if there is a recovery partition there. The old disk probably hand it but maybe not new one.

Don’t select any thing however

I don’t know if I can describe it accurately or not but I no longer have the conventional HD - it’s 100% digital = no spinning disc as far as I know. It is a SanDisk SDSSDP128 ATA Device ( I just did a search and I’m right about no moving parts - 100% solid state). I don’t know if that makes any difference or not?

No except they are usually smaller so the operating system is installed on a ssd and the normal hard disk is used for documents, pictures , for storage. The reason you do not have many restore points is how you have sytem protection set up. If you turn off and back on all are deleted. In addition if you have the disk space allocated low for restore then they also can get deleted. It is shown as 128gb is small for todays standard. I have a 128gb sdd and a 2 terra bite hard drive.

if you are still unsure what hardware resp. video subsystem you have, get and run free Speccy and post results for graphics card here.

Here are the results of the Speccy report

Driver version was updated ref above post ~ 3-30 with latest driver version ~ 2010 but did not take for some reason.;(

For whatever reason I don’t know but this computer worked fine with SU before the hard drive failed with no problems. So, I have to think that my hardware along with the software for it was fine. 2 days ago I was all but ready to save all that I thought was necessary (updates along with my normal backup) so that I could format my HD and start over! I have never had any problem such as this before! I have had now 4 different computers / systems since 1994 and I’ve even formatted HD’s in the past and reloaded all the software. I’ve even added several types of hardware to my computers in the past without any issues whatsoever. This system and everything about it has me going in circles! I realize I’m getting older and my mind isn’t at all working like it used to so I am hampered by that but I have never had to face situations like this. I called the tech that installed my HD yesterday and I’m taking my computer over to him so he can get it straightened out again (since I have messed things up  = on my own!! . . . nothing you did!). And, I’m am hoping he can sort this dilemma out too so I can get on with using SU again?? I hope so anyway? I bookmarked this site/ topic so he can follow and read the thread.

I have different view point. I have enough trouble shooting experience allowing the loss of a base configuration should usually not happen.
Suggestion: You have data tech may not know about so:
Take the DELL disk that came with your desk top along;
Let him know you have data from the Speccy eval that may help him.

mac,
I did not take my computer over. I first called this morning to make sure he had time for me and after talking just a bit I realized he pretty much had his mind made up that my system could never utilize the SU program. I told him before that indeed I was able to use SU and had for years but today he said it never did? Out of frustration I just shut up and let him go. To say the least I’ve lost faith in him :frowning:
I will do whatever you tell me to do but regretably I have to ask you to talk to me as if I know not a thing about computers making your directions as descriptive as possible since even the most base computer jargon is lost with me - Please! Terms like even GC (in TIG’s response) completely confuse me. I think it has something to do with graphics but I’m not sure? I haven’t always been like this. I used to be able to work in dos and knew pretty much what I was doing but I’ve been away from all of this so long I forgot about all that I did know. I am going to read the articles that TIG posted to see if I can interpret what I may need. You mentioned that I have data from Speccy that may help? I didn’t even realize that! I guess it must be the “blued” line? You also mentioned that even though I ran the graphic update it didn’t install? I never got a notice implying that - rather the opposite that it was complete? If I can find the file I’ll run it again.
Thanks to you again and to TIG too - talk to you later

mac
I just ran the driver update utility for the graphics card and did the automic search resulting in:“my graphics card up to date”

You ran the speccy app and posted the graphics info above. In that report it shows the driver version 8.15.10.2004 but screen shot you showed 3/30 shows newer dated driver. I think that was a screen shot of the DELL update screen and assumed you installed it.
See your post about the graphics card up to date. when you do that are you at the DELL 1764 site , using the TAG number and the automatic check or using the INTEL utility like you posted here Downloaded Issues - #26 by wheston
Do not rush to find and run it again at present.
Time to take a big breath, relax let us at least recommend approach before you take any action of course we are not infallible.
Speccy has two versions one is free and other you have to pay, to post the graphics above you had to download it to run it, which option did you select?

  • Speccy runs a profile of your whole PC giving info on the internal parts and then allows you to save the report to file, data can be useful to you and us. If you saved first time please post it so we can see it other wise run again and post it. so we can see it. It gives you two options to save as spread sheet or text files either is ok.
  • I’ll let TIG answer you question ref GC,read info in link he posted.
  • Is you PC usable for other things you use it for, so it is only a SU issue?

Geeez~ I guess I got hasty and I just ran the graphics update again. I just sent another report and from it you can see that I’m worse off now :frowning: Sorry mac

I’ll see if I can find the speccy report? BTW - I uploaded the free version of Speccy
Downloaded Speccy again (lost in restore) = ran it and saved a text file which I’m now attaching. Hope it works out for you (and me?)

I tried the XML option but I guess the “free” version won’t allow it? It may well be the same result of the previous file I posted? If you need another screen capture of a different file - let me know.

If you want me to undo the restore = let me know. I will do nothing else until I hear again from you mac. thanks again

Let us try Speccy again. Run it and then select save , select txt this time. No need to attach screen shot again. Note the screen shot shows driver version 8.15.10.2104
This forum will not allow you to attach a txt file so you will have to send it to me via private message. See my profile for email link for that.
Sorry I have no idea which restore point you are talking about. Do not think necessary ?
I need to get on the same page with you in regards to updates. This is the DELL site I have been using , please log on to that and select the driver help and tutorials at bottom of page, the http://www.dell.com/support/article/SLN128900 and then following the video instructions. Select step 4. Note; When they say go to support.dell.com note it redirects to different page so follow there then.Let us know about driver version. Make no changes yet, it shows me some bios and other changes, select the arrows on left side of page, but no video changes.

Do you want me to go ahead and make the other improvements regarding the other driver, bios updates: 3 - DVR, BIOS, WLAN - " select the arrows on left side of page, but no video changes. ": WITHOUT uploading the graphics? I will tell you this - it does not show any graphics driver changes needed - I have the latest version now I believe which is: v.8.15.10.2104

Further down I can see my “downloads list” and in it I see the graphics driver I downloaded and which is the same as above.

I do not think it is necessary at this time, you are seeing the same as me and wanted to make sure we were on the same page. Eventually those should be updated. I am still not seeing the Speccy report would still like to see that.
I sent you my email it looks like the forum is still filtering out text files.
After that will want to address what Graphics Library is really on your machine. ( Part of TIGs link he gave you)
After I will probably ask you to reconsider the issue of doing a repair install which you do not want to do. The reason is I did not communicate very good above related to the deletion of those wild card files and I lead you to possibly deleting things that should not have been done. I’ll PM you with more detail so you can think about it. The idea is to get to a known configuration base line, then install any required / recommended updates. Just because you could run SU8 does not establish that is sufficient for SU2015. Hope you machine can handle the 2015 and hope you can stand the hassel of getting there. That step is never pleasant.

As for downloading and running SU8 - I tried that about 3 weeks back but it did not open up either. Of course that is after having problems with SU 15 AND after I had the new HD installed but NOT after my deleting files as I have since. Also - when examing all my old files and follders I came upon a SU 2014 folder (which was empty). I believe my prior version, a version I had used before my HD problems, was in fact SU 14. How much different that version was than 15 I don’t know but I suppose it wasn’t all that much different? The only significant change I’ve seen is who handles the program now (Trimble) vs ? (can’t remember the company then? And remember too I can open SU 15 in Safe mode if that makes any difference?
When you referenced “repair install” - what does that mean? Is that reformatting the HD and starting over? . . or simply booting on my Windows disc or the Application disc I have? I’m not really opposed to either actually. I’ve been going in circles with this computer so long that I now realize it would have been so much easier in the first place had I reformatted the HD and started over if that would have brought success?

Yes and is based on the directions in the files you were asked to down load and read which I think you said you did. You downloaded from the DELL 1764 site, remember those? There are two disk delivered with your PC one is the operating system and other is various drivers. and utilities. That will bring you up to as delivered configuration, you will then have to run windows updates and driver updates to bring you to present day configuration with all the released fixes.
BTW there were significant API changes between 2014 and 2015 so you will have to load new plugins ins also, Do not copy them over you have to down load and install new ones. It is probably better for you to wait and worry about installing new ones last. SU will run with the ones installed with it. How and where they are stored is different than SU8 also.

I have in my recycle bin most if not all the the CCC files along with the ATI files I deleted from my system. I was wondering if perhaps I can reinstall them to get back to the configuration prior to removing all those files? Should I try that first or do a reinstall from the original basic configuration I had when I first bought my system?
