Does anyone know how to create high quality thatched roofs?

What exactly does this mean? For rendering, for 3D printing, or for something else?

@mihai.s question is apt. Depending on what you want to do with the model, choices could range from a low-poly shape with an image texture applied to it, to a full model of each straw in the visible part of the roof. The latter would require a massive amount of geometry and likely cause the model to be very hard to work with.

@mihai.s beat me to it (for rendering)

I tried it for a recent project but it is hard to get right. I just used a texture.

This is one of the built projects I worked on (I designed the timber frame interior)

Thanks for your reply Mihai, the Fur V-Ray video is interesting and I’d found it before, but unfortunately it doesn’t really allow the realistic creation of a traditional British or European style thatch. I will find a solution and will advise on here when I have.

Indeed. Well initially for detailed sketchup model which can be used for the specific purposes of showing design concepts to clients and ultimately for the use in Planning Application Drawings and beyond that to Building Regulation Drawings and details. Creating realistic renders for the purpose of instructing clients and Planners is also an important element of my question.

Also thanks bmike, cute thatched roof details, especially the window, but those timbers are lovely, a work of art!

Adding a new wear layer to the edges. Changing a few other settings.
