Docking tray issues

To whom this may concern -

I downloaded SketchUp 2026 so far it’s awesome with only one problem… my docking tray will not stay like how I build it every time going into “2026”. So I re-build it every time I launch “2026” which is time consuming. Needless to say, I use all 14 tray exclusively - everyday, so to re-build them takes approximately 37 minutes to re-build all 291 tags and reload all 93 materials. Anyone please help me. Time = money and I’m wasting my money by having to do this every time.

The positions and expaned/collapsed state of the inspector panels in the tray are saved in a file called PrivatePreferences.json in User/AppData/Local/SketchUp/SketchUp 2026/SketchUp. AppData is a normally hidden folder but you can make hidden folders visible in File Explorer.

What you describe makes it sound like Windows has not granted SketchUp permissions to properly write to this file and this typically occurs when the user hasn’t installed SketchUp correctly. Correctly means right clicking on the downloaded installer and selecting Run as administrator (while signed into Windows with the normal user sign-in.)

At this point I would suggest quitting both SketchUp and LayOut. Do a cold reboot of your computer, find the installer in your Downloads folder, right click on it, choose Run as administrator and when the options are presented, choose Repair. After it completes do another cold reboot, start up SketchUp and set up the tray the way you want. Open a model file and do something–orbit the camera bit–and save the file. Quit SketchUp and reopen it to check to see what the tray looks like. If it’s not right, there’s another step to do but it’s more invasive.

Sorry Dave –

I followed all your steps with the last thing, I re-booted SketchUp and the problem is still there…

Well, the next step would be to close SketchUp, go to Username/AppData/Local/SketchUp/SketchUp 2026/SketchUp, and delete PrivatePreferences.json. Do the repair process again and then open SketchUp to set up the tray as you wish. Then save and quit followed by restarting.

This is more invasive because the file also stores toolbar visibility states and locations so deleting it will require resetting them, too.

Alright Dave…

This isn’t working, I did both ways and I re-launched 2026 and the same problem still occurs.
