Creating an SVG File in Sketchup Pro 2024

I am looking at buying a Shaper Origin. My research says that it reads only SVG files. It does not look like SVG is a choice under Export. There is some suggestion that there are ways for doing this. Most of what I can find is older and I am wondering if someone has current experience that might solve my problem. One article suggested that I could export a DXF file then convert to SVG, but it wasn’t clear on exactly how to accomplish this.

One way to convert the DXF to SVG would be via a free application called Inkscape.

Have you used Inkscape? If so do you have any tips.

I’ve used it some but I wouldn’t consider myself an expert. There’s a lot of tutorials out there about working in Inkscape, though. Basically open the .dxf in Inkscape and save as a .svg file. You can manipulate the geometry in Inkscape if you need to as well as do other editing there but probably you can just open and use File>Save as … If your file is clean in the first place it should work fine.

Thanks Again for you advice.

Good luck. And have fun with the Shaper Origin. My wife tells me I’m not allowed to even look at their website because it makes me drool.

My wife is the same. We winter in Mesa and there is a wood shop here and I have a lot of friends. The plan is to purchase one as a group. A very carefully selected group. We have a lot of members in our wood shop that shouldn’t be allowed close to power tools.

No doubt they will end up with all the power and voting rites.

I have a Shaper Origin and love it, awesome tool. The latest version of Open CutList will export an SVG file. I haven’t tried it yet but it should work. I’ve dabbled with Autodesk Fusion 360 and would like to learn it. But for now I’m enjoying the process of trying to master SketchUp. The free(ish) Shaper Studio is also a pretty good tool.

This is my first chance to offer something back to this generous group.
I recently completed a large and complex gate design that I’m processing on a CNC plasma cutter. I decided to use Inkscape as it is better suited than SU for this sort of work (at least in my experience). Inkscape can easily export to the SVG outputs that you’ll need for your Shaper tool. It is also quite simple to import bitmap images and convert them to a vector path (SVG) in Inkscape. You will need to clean up the nodes though, but that is fairly simple. There is a lot of support on-line for Inkscape. I found a number of You-tube tutorials focusing on Inkscape and Shaper.

@eneroth3 has a plugin that exports to svg.

I have been playing around with Open Cut-List trying to export an SVG file from a Sketchup file. I can’t find any videos that specifically address this new feature in Open Cut-List. Any suggestions?

I have been using the FaceSVG plugin for simple forms for Schaper for over a year. I am satisfied.
For complex curved shapes, I model in Inscape, because SkechUp doesn’t draw a curve, but creates a polygon whose corners can be seen after milling.

Funnily enough I was looking at these today.
