Component-heavy model

I’m not sure if I’m posting this in the right “compartment”, but here goes:

I’m in the final stages of creating a model which contains a lot of iterations of a few components. I need to create a surface from these, in order to push-pull it and make a solid group. I’ve tried to explode all these components simultaneously, but gave up after waiting for 20 minutes while the process unfolded. I then reverted to doing this piecemeal, but SU became more and more sluggish as I went along, to the point where I decided to try and see if I could start creating the desired surface. This was also very slow, even for simple operations. This is a view from the rear:

I want to close these volumes in order to make the back of the structure flush with the frame, as well as adding depth to the grating.
Suggestions, anyone? I’ll upload the file if requested and/or necessary…

the file is almost always required to offer assistance…

I doubt you need to ‘explode’ anything for example, but I can’t tree for sure…

Can’t get the file to upload; too big, even when compressed. Since my problem involves the size of the file, I don’t think uploading this will really help…
