Coloured lines

I need to show a setting out grid on my final production drawings, and I’ve been asked to have it show (print) in red chain lines.

I know i need to draw it in SU rather than LO; If I do it in the sheet files the dimensions to and from the grid will not follow the scale of the drawing.

So how do I draw a red chain line. (long dash, dot, long dash) in SU? I can change the style of the line to chain line in LO - for everything on that tag. But what about coloured lines?

Create a group or component containing those lines and then assign a suitable dash style for the tag.

In LayOut you can make the lines red as a setting for the tag. Personally I would assign the dash style in LayOut instead of in SketchUp. Then also adjust the Line Scale and Dash Scale along with the color to make them appear as you want.

Different application of the dashes but here, they are set to red.

that sounds like what Ive been doing but …

clicking the coloured box and choosing red, doesn’t make the line turn red!!!

Wrong box. Click on the dashed line to the right of the tag. Adjust the color in the panel that appears.

Set Lines to Color by Material, enable Color by Tag, and assign the desired color and line style to the tag.

no panel appears?!

You don’t need color by tag in this case. That forces color by tag for all tags which isn’t needed here.

line

styles yes, colours? no!

You should be able to do the same thing I show here in LayOut.

Indeed, you can assign the material directly to the line, but I find it easier to manage this through the tag.

You also don’t need to assign a material to the lines in the model..Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.

I love working on a Mac… sometimes… :man_shrugging:

Yes, you can set all of this up directly in LayOut. But have you ever tried adding new tags after setting up all your line and color overrides in LayOut?

Good luck with that!

what dave is showing in layout for pc also works in layout for mac.

this is sketchup interface.
try in layout.

This is from the Help Files.

Yes. I have. And I have no problem managing that in Layout.

I can tell you it won’t always play nice. Once you start using those overrides, LayOut no longer reacts properly to scene changes where tags are turned on or off.

It works if you know how to use it properly.

Ha. Full circle.

I’m still not clear how I use LO to alter the colour and style of a line drawn in a SketchUp file.

Select the viewport in LayOut. Go to the Tags section of the SketchUp Model panel. Click on the Dashes line to the right of the tag name. To change the color click on the black bar to the right of Color: as shown in the screenshot I posted. Change the color to and then click the OK button.

You can also select the dash style, Scale, and Edge Width in that window if you want to change them.

This won’t affect the color of the edges in the SketchUp model. It’ll only affect the way they are displayed in the selected viewport(s).
