Any advice for fixing the choppy zoom in Layout? I feel like its gotten worse with 26.
press K ?
is it actually choppy, or do you have draft mode (K) enabled ? it makes your viewports temporary go white when you zoom and pan.
Had no idea that was an option, but that’s not the problem.
Can you share the LO file so we can have a look and compare performance on a different machine or two?
All of my Layout files run the same, no matter how many pages or the size of the sketchup model. Here is one for you to check out.

This is what I see when I zoom in and out in your file on my machine.

That makes me suspect your graphics card.
Side note: I notice that most of the viewports show that you’ve overridden the Camera properties for the scenes. That makes you LO file less stable and could mean more work for you.
Yeah thats exaclty how it looks on my machine. My graphics card should be fine, I’m on a Macbook Pro thats only a few years old.
I’m just finding that the zoom is choppy like that and it leads me to zoom way too far out or way to far in because of how slow it is.
This is just a quick design review file that I threw together, thats why you see the viewports with the overridden Camera properties. Much faster than setting up scenes in this case ![]()
Maybe it’s the GIF recording but I’m not seeing it as choppy on my end.
Here’s another recording.
Maybe for an example file. In practice, modifying the Camera properties might seem faster on the front end but will likely cost you time later.
I changed my mouse scroll speed and that seems to have made it a little better.
I think the issue may be that I am zooming in/out on my mouse faster than Layout can move. Therefore, I end up scrolling too far in/out because I am wanting it to continue zooming but Layout just isn’t keeping up. The difference in how the zoom works between Sketchup and Layout is also paritally to blame. Any idea if there is a way to adjust settings so that the zoom between the two programs acts a bit more similarly?
What mouse are you using? I haven’t noticed a different behavior of the zooming on sketchup and layout, they both behave as expected for me either on windows or macOS. There’s a solution if you have a Logitech or a high end mouse to control the speed of the scrolling depending on the program you use, it’s made from the Logitech options+ software or the app of your mouse brand.
hmmmno, even with logitech, on mac os there is a glitch where if you zoom out too quickly, the page jumps back and sometimes partially disappears below the horizon.
it’s not mouse related, and as Phil describes, we tend to zoom in and out a lot more in SU than layout, I often get it during the first 20-30min. after that I’m used to zooming a little bit less.
Adjusting the ‘Scroll Speed’ adjusts how fast the zoom works.

yeah, I’m at minimum speed and it’s fine. and I can’t reproduce the weird bug I’ve seen over the last few versions (where zooming out, on mac, drops the page at the bottom of the screen)
so… I guess something got fixed somewhere in the long list of fixes ![]()
Using the Logitech MX master 3. I’ve tried adjusting scroll speed within Layout and directly in the Logitech software but nothing seems to work. Sketchup zooms in/out smoothly and Layout is a jumpy, choppy mess. Current settings, Layout set to to slowest speed and my mouse is set to 10% scroll speed in the Logitech software.
I am realizing this morning that the zoom in speed vs the zoom out speed in Layout is actually different as well which is interesting. From fully zoomed out, if it takes me 8 wheel scrolls to zoom in on something, it takes 4 equal scrolls to zoom back out fully.
Its difficult to tell where the issues are. I have a MX Master 3 + Keyboard. I havent tried pluging it in direct to the USB port but suspect some wierdness (sometimes) is the Bluetooth connection. In Sketchup zooming is slow and laggy when something is selected. Zoom changes if you hovering over objects or out in space. The Keyboard has buffering problems, it gets text out of order typing fast or hangs the shift key often making the second character a cap. the mouse often drops when doing something like a push pull. Then as you mentioned we have multipal places to adjust the speed of the mouse wheel.
My conclusion is its not just Sketchup or Layout but they do behave differently from older versions on the same computer and mouse/keyboard.
Interesting. I also use the keyboard and haven’t experienced anything untoward with it. The zooming change when on/off objects in Sketchup definetly happens but I can’t be sure thats a mouse issue.
Anyone else out there using this mouse on Mac experiencing similar issues?
Other mouse recommendations?
One thing we introduced in 2025 that can be a huge help with heavy models is the use of the Zoom Window tool (z). Using this in conjunction with the Zoom to Page (p) tool makes navigation way faster.

A colleague of mine has a Razer Naga Mouse, it’s a gaming mouse that has 12 programmable buttons on the left side of the mouse, I tried it once but it felt too light and less ergonomic than the MX3/MX4, the 12 programmable buttons called my attention but I found myself turning my head all the time or pressing different buttons to get the tool I wanted, I used it for a few hours, I’m sure that you can dominate it with a bit more practice.
That’s super helpful actually! Thanks for pointing that out.
On Mac a few years ago I gave up using Bluetooth for SpaceMouse, CadMouse and the older Logitechs that I used. Just wasn’t as responsive as wired. Keyboards have been fine to BT… so there might be something there.
