I was modelling a “Centre” Finder by Robert Wearing when I got an email from my son who said
he needed a chess piece. I had roughly whittled some pawn before for him. So, I decided I’d model the bishop first in Sketch Up. Here goes.
A lathe yes - or perhaps a 3D printer 
Everyone loves to find new reasons for getting new cool tools!
But my dad who was genuinely handy would have shaped small things like this by fixing the piece to his hand drill and using that as a simple lathe by clamping it to his workbench and making me turn the handle.
