Trying to change an existing template from the default to clear on an existing file. Is that possible?

I’m not familiar with a “clear template”. Would x-ray mode work for you? View>face style> x-ray
Not sure what you’re looking for.
unless you only require x-ray, other changes are made in the Styles panel…

A template is just a starting file pre-configured with some settings. It isn’t a thing remembered in your model other than in those settings. You can later change them any way you like.
