Can't open Layout

Hello All.

Crash #7662
Crash #7663 and many more after.

I can open Sketchup 2026 fine but not Layout.

It was working ok a couple of days ago but now all I get is it trying to start up and then bug splat.

I have tried opening Layout from Sketchup, but this has the same effect. I have scaned for viruses, but all clean.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling after a reboot twice now. I have updated the graphics drivers and Windows 11 and 3D connexion drivers (Connexion is not working in Sketchup). Cleaned my screens and swore at it. I even consulted the handbook, but nothing gets Layout working again.

I have looked at deleting the .plo file but can not find one ( I think this may have changed since previous versions but I stand to be corrected) I have contacted support and am waiting for their reply.

I have not got a clue as to what changed to make it stop working.

Is there anything else I can try?

You can try locating the folder where the temp / autosave backup files are saved.

I’m on a Mac so I don’t know where these are on PC but look where the application / application support files would be. Find LayOut and find ‘working’. In there you might have a corrupt file that LO is trying to load into the welcome screen.

On windows that would be: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\SketchUp\SketchUp 2026\LayOut\working

Oh, and you might look at this : Sketchup 2026 BugSplat on Startup (Win 11 PC v25H2) - at a loss, all fixes don't seem to work - #4 by napperkt

It’s SU not, LO, but maybe a splat on start up is the caused by the same Windows glitch ?

Thank you for your reply and help with this

There are a lot of folders at that location but no .plo file. I did try removing all the folder and seeing if that made any difference but no, it just the same.

I have searched *.plo under C:\ and find the following;

When I look in the folder i see the following. Are the TXT file supposed to be .plo files?

after removing the above files and trying to start Layout the files are regenerated and Layout still does the same crash.

Getting desperate here now.

Thank you for your help

Thanks bmike,

Would not a reinstall correct that? I have done this twice now and still no difference.

I am truly at a loss here.

Thank you for your help

Did you right click on the installer and choose Run as administrator when you reinstalled?

I don’t think a re-install wipes those folders.

no. i did not, I will try that

Use the Repair option when it is presented. Before doing it do a cold reboot of the machine. After it completes do another cold reboot.

Thanks for your help.

No difference.

I think… I will try, uninstalling. shut down. reinstall as admin. shut down. start up. and see what happens.

Thank you for your help

Might be that you should also remove all references to LayOut in the User/AppData/SketchUp directory and clean the Registry, too.

Ok. Solved it!

What I did was uninstalled sketchup 2026 and deleted the Sketchup 2026 folders in the following locations, as they were still pressent.

C:\Users\hillt\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2026 and

C:\Users\hillt\AppData\Local\SketchUp\SketchUp 2026

(‘hillt’ is specific to my computer. insert you own profile/subfolder)

Shut down as Dave suggested.

install as Admin

Shut down.

Start up

and I have a fresh install with Layout opening. I just need to migrate extensions etc etc now.

I need to write all this down for future reference.

So all good now. Thank you for all your help. Have a good weekend, I know I will now.

All the best.

Good deal.

Going forward when ou install complex application like SketchUp right click on the installer and choose Run as administrator. This should head off problems like this.

Thanks Dave. All the best

*Unfortunately the crashes are happening so quickly in the startup process, that there is not much information in them.

I want to try a Clean install of SketchUp 2026 using the steps below. It will remove some additional files that are not removed during a normal uninstall. When you reinstall, please use the Offline Installer I linked in the instructions instead of the Common installer.

Try those steps and let me know if that helps.

Be aware this process will remove all installed extensions and any customizations, so you may need to reinstall extensions and reset workspace, etc. after doing this. If you have custom libraries for Materials, Components, etc., please let me know before you try this.

*Please uninstall SketchUp 2026 from the Add Remove Programs list. Just type Add Remove Programs in the Windows Search Bar next to the windows button on your Task Bar. After uninstalling, please go to the following locations and delete the SketchUp folders:*

**

*C:\Program Files\SketchUp 2026

C:\ProgramData\SketchUp 2026
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\SketchUp 2026
C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp 2026****
