I’m relatively new to SketchUp and I’m currently following a tutorial to trace a plant image I imported so I can turn it into a 3D shape.
To trace the organic curves of the plant leaves, I’ve been using the Bezier Curve tool. However, even after closing the loop entirely, SketchUp isn’t generating a solid face inside the shape. I just have the outline, and I can’t extrude it or push/pull it.
I’ve already exploded the image to make sure I’m not drawing on top of a raw image object, but it still won’t close.
Could someone please take a look at my setup and point out where I might be going wrong? I’ve attached a screenshot/model file. Any help would be massively appreciated!
Most often when a face won’t form either the edges you have drawn are not coplanar or there is a gap somewhere in what you thought was a continuous loop. I can’t tell from your video what is going wrong. Could you share a skp file saved at the point when you think a face should have formed?
I think the face not forming is just the nature of the beast, I may be wrong but I would assume the tool is working on the Bezier and not naturally thinking about faces.
I read online that might be the case. Is there any way you can lock to a particular plane so that when you draw curves it will always be coplanar? Thanks
There is no lock per-se, but you can start by drawing a large rectangle in the plane you want and then carefully waiting for an on plane inference as you draw the outline. There are some extensions that restrict drawing to a plane, but I don’t think any of them use Bézier curves.
Yes, this is a good idea, but I’d need to be able to trace around the plant. I’m not sure how to do that while also having a plain sheet of paper underneath so that it would fix to that.
Not sure if that makes sense. please ask me if I didn’t explain that well.
could i use Eneroth Flatten to Plane and Eneroth Plane Creator?
Thanks for your help. I’ve managed to generate the face. I’ve now created this 3D shape, but I’m not sure why the bottom is hollowed out. Would you be able to help any thanks?
I’m on my phone, so can’t look at your model now. But do I understand that the flower is 3-d? If so it seems likely that your points are being inferred off plane due to the geometry of the plant. Perhaps eneroth’s extension would fix that.
Hi there. no actually it’s not 3D. It’s a 2D face me image. So basically to keep the model smaller, you use an AI generated image of a plant (text prompt to generated image). So this gives the illusion of it being 3D from the sides. Obviously from the top it wouldn’t be 3D, but generally you would use different planting icons for if you were looking from the top
Either trace a segment to form the face or don’t use a circle touching the profile when you do the follow me.
Native follow me tends to explode the curves and you have ‘Endpoints’ turned on in your style. Edit the style to remove them and save the style.
