Can't erase a drawing. It's like a rusty car in the yard

Can’t erase a drawing. Won’t let me do anything to it. Just stuck in my drawing like a rusty car in the yard

Hard to know without looking at the file.

Here is the file. It appears that this model will not let me do anything to it. It just sits in my drawing like a broken tractor in the field. I downloaded it from 3D Warehouse then I was in the process of doing some things to it to meet my needs. Soon after it became fixed in the drawing preventing my ability to do anything to it _including erasing it_i. Seems this component has some programmable changes to it built in. Perhaps they are preventing my ability to even delete it???

I have found a way to get rid of it. It has required me to make single components of everything in my drawing that wasn’t this component and save them separately on my computer. Then erase this abomination. THEN bring everything back into a drawing with it gone!!!

SKETCHUP FOLKS ----- This is not acceptable. I have been using Sketchup since the turn of the Century. Never have I encountered such a stubid problem requiring so much effort to find a work around! Can this be fixed? Steve ----- Sketchup user since 2001

Your forum profile says you are using SketchUp 2018 Pro but this file appears to have been done in SketchUp for Web. Which version are you really using?

STEVE FOLKS ----- okay. does it usually work ? scolding the people who might help you even before they’ve had any chance to do so ?

Thanks Dave,
I just needed to get rid of it from within the realm of many components contained in a much larger drawing. I could have downloaded the component again if I still needed it. I am interested to know what procedure you used to make it cooperate and if that procedure could be used if once again I get a component stuck in a drawing. I tried everything I could think of but it was unresponsive.

I opened the object for editing and then closed it again. I also moved the object close to the origin. It was close to 500 feet away.

Mr Nab,
Is stubid a French word for something bad? I certainly wasn’t scolding any person. Being frustrated after fighting with a program for a couple hours and seeing the only way to fix it is to save every unit you’ve drawn separately as a component along with the time it would take to do that is, I’d say, rather frustrating at the very least. One of the great disappointments in life these days (for me) is that I can’t just take out an eraser (like I used to) and fix the problem. (Dave thanks for figuring it out) Although I’d already figured out a go-around.
I will never reach the level of a Sage. Thank God you all are out there. Understand… I have been struggling with this program for years trying to make it do what I needed done. Attached is an image of work that I had to make molds for and cast. (Before “Follow Me”). I have a long history with Sketchup. I used to drive To Boulder to talk to the few “Sages” on the payroll back in the early part of this century. I hope my struggles helped steer the creators in the right direction. I admit it’s getting too complex for me. 2018 was far enough. Perhaps I will find a way to learn my way into the next decade. Probably not. I’m sure I will be frustrated often. I don’t know… I guess I think something is stupid if I can’t just grab an eraser and erase it.

Thanks to you all for what you do. I will try but I’m afraid I missed whatever bus you young folks are on heading into the future. I’ll ride my bicycle behind as long as I can. Steve

Firstly, we have always suggested that you download and insert 3DW components into a new empty model. Then examine them for problems, reduce the number of faces, reduce texture sizes, run Solid Inspector on them, etc., etc.
Only when satisfied, save it locally as a component file in your local collection, and insert it into a larger model via the Components inspector as you would other trusted components.

Re, erasing it. Did you try to select it using the Outliner panel? You can context-click objects in the Outliner tree and Erase from there. Or just select in the object tree and hit the DELETE key.

You can also find the component definition in the Components inspector, right-click it and choose Delete. A query box will popup warning that all instances will be deleted. Just confirm.

Don’t waste hours. Come here and ask.
