Can anyone tell me what I have done to this component. I try to make a copy and make it unique and then change one copy so the liquid inside is yellow and in the other copy it is brown. But when I change the second copy (which is unique) it changes the color of both
There are no components in the file you posted, only groups. As such the groups can be copied by copy paste or by modified move tool and there is no need to make either group “unique”, as groups they have no relationship with each other and are unique by default. There should be no trouble in making one liquid a different color in the file you posted.
If however you have included an erroneous file and in fact you are woking with a component version of this. It may be that there are in fact two or more components here, one for the whole bottle assembly and one nested inside of that for the liquid. Making a copy of the outer component and making it unique will not effect the inner component of the liquid which is still connected and needs to also be made unique.
I think it is something to do with my computer or my SketchUp program. I just tried to change the color of a completely different component in my main model and it changed all of the transparent materials in the model
How are you changing the color? It sounds like you are editing the material from the materials pallet which will change every instance of that color in the model. If you want to change the color of a single bottle contents, open that group for editing by double clicking and again to drill down to the liquid until you have access to the raw geometry of the liquid then use the paint bucket to apply a different material to that geometry.
If you are editing the material without creating a new, distinct one, of course the change affects everything painted with that material. They all share the material, there is not a separate copy for each object painted with it.
Ok, I knew I was doing something wrong. Yes, I was editing it in the material pallet.
How do I make a distinct color
I think I figured out how to make a distinct color
I’m on my phone now, not my computer. So I’m going by memory, which isn’t always reliable…but open the materials window, select the “colors in model” collection and the look for something that says “add” or “new” or the like. I don’t recall whether it is in plain sight, on a right click menu, or on the menu when you click the little right arrow icon at upper right. Then choose the color or whatever you want the new material to have. If there is a predefined material you haven’t used, you can just select it. Use the paint bucket tool to apply the material.
