Annotated Lines

I’m an architect in Australia, specializing in residential projects. For every project I am required to provide a Site Plan that identifies a range of things, among them various service lines - underground sewer mains and stormwater drainage and overhead electrical mains. Surveyors have software that has specialized lines to show those utilities - dash SW dash SW dash eg: —— SW ——– SW —— or whatever letters are appropriate.

Is such a thing available in SketchUp of Layout?

those kind of dashes don’t exist on SketchUp or Layout. If I had to do something like that I would create an assembly using profile builder using 3D text without extrusion or Tig´s plugin 2D tools.

If you don’t have Profile Builder, rudimentary complex lines can also be created as Dynamic Components. The image below has some I made. Scaling adds or removes dashes as needed.

Dynamic components is also a good option, the only limitation is that it works just on straight lines, if you have corners you must rotate the component manually to continue with the dashes, on profile builder you can create especial components for corners and it’s a lot easier to create than a dynamic component. IMHO profile builder is one of the best extensions for sketchup, it can save you hours or even days of work when you learn to use all its features, it’s worth the investment.
