No, the i9-9900 is the desktop i use proffesionaly at the office.

The Precission 7720 is my personal laptop i have at home.

Both not win11 ready due to certain components that are not compatible.

Yeah, I preferr a desktop as I get more “bang” for my $$$ as it were. It looks like the Tower Plus replaced the XPS line. I’ve spec’d out a system for just a bit over $4k so I might be able to slip that by.

The move from 1TB to 2TB was $500. WTF???

Yeah, I’m in higher ed and we can only buy from preferred vendors. So Dell, Lenovo, Apple, etc.. I did slip in several years ago and bought an Asus laptop for using during meetings and site visits. It’s a 4th gen i7 and it’s still working. I’ve bought personal stuff from NewEgg for years and no issues.

Somewhere inbetween 2300 an 4200 euro?

That’s a huge range. There are a lot of different possible solutions to this. The goal would need to be defined a bit more precisely.
SketchUp and Microstation. But the question of CPU or GPU rendering still needs to be clarified.
And if local AI models are actually supposed to run, then VRAM, RAM, and SSD capacity are particularly important factors. And memory, storage and graphics cards are currently the biggest problem in terms of cost.
A year ago, 128 GB of DDR5-5600 cost 300–350€; now it’s 1500€ to over 2000€ (including VAT).
By the way, that’s another point to clarify… does the budget mentioned include or exclude VAT?

I think the usage will be quite basic, as I said: 2D in MicroStation (AutoCAD style) and 3D with SketchUp. In SketchUp, we use the software/extension for sunshade analysis, and for our wind analysis, we have a cloud solution. So far, we haven’t needed realistic renderings. I also do some photo and video editing.

But since I cannot predict the future, it would be nice to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, where we do have to present realistic renderings, use AI functions more frequently like those being implemented in increasingly more software, import point clouds, import large and heavy terrain and building models created with third-party software, and so on.

Most AI functions typically don’t run on the machine , they are cloud services - if they do (which is less usual) they will normally run on the GPU or increasingly on an NPU.

So, no local AI and not much rendering.

That makes things simpler and a bit more affordable.(as far as that’s currently possible with these crazy memory prices…)

In that case, I’d recommend an Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus. It currently delivers pretty much the highest single-core performance (5,270 PassMark points - only the 285K is faster, for an extra €200) and acceptable multi-core performance

Alternatively an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X or 9950X3D, with slightly better rendering performance but lower single-core performance (PassMark 4,729 and 4,740 points)

It depends entire what you’re using it for. SketchUp is an Application that only uses a single core. In that regard a Mac will save you much better because its single core performance (even with its cheapest processor) is outstanding (M5 single core = 4,340, a18pro (Neo) = 3,597). I use sketchup comfortably on a MacBook Neo for $500. But SketchUp software on Mac doesn’t have as much integration as PC version (revit import, Trimble etc). If you’re planning to do rendering with it, then you definitely need high multicore performance. Also, AI proofing is very unpredictable. It really depends on where you think AI is headed. If you think cloud based LLMs are the future then you really don’t necessarily need much local compute power (but you’ll pay through the nose for your future AI subscription). If you think, like myself, that cloud based LLMS (chatGPT, Claude etc) are in a devastating bubble waiting to crash, then you need a processor that can work well with an onboard local LLMs. For the price the Mac ARM chip architecture simply can’t been beating in this regards (but you need a hell of a lot of RAM (min 64gb)). In any case if your future proofing consider going with ARM chipset instead of x86 as that is where the industry is headed.

Better be prepared for future system requirements for the next 7 to 8 years, right? :wink:

I’ve never gotten more than 2-3 years out of a work PC.

But I generally get 5+ working years out of my Macs, and another 5 where they serve as backup or in the case of my laptop they work fine for all my other tasks.
