The way this works now is a 'recipe for disaster ’ , I think. Maybe if only groups or components could be added, it would help to learn the ‘SketchUp’ way of layer-usage.

. This is not a good interface. You should be able to assign layers to object without changing the active layer. In fact you shouldn’t be able to change the active layer as there is no valid reason for doing so in SU.
