Join us this week as @TheOnlyAaron and I take on the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This tower took nearly 200 years to build, we intend to expedite that process into less than 2 hours. If all goes well, it should be a Pisa-cake! (Tune in live for more dad jokes and SketchUp tips!)
Isn’t it going to be modeling just straight forward (level and plumb) and then @TheOnlyAaron showing his strength, pushing the tower to its proper tilt?
That wouldn’t work. Below is translated from the Dutch Wikipedia page of the tower as this piece is missing in the English version..
"Crooked and warped
Shortly after construction began in 1173, the tower began to lean. Because construction continued perpendicularly (vertical), the tower is not only leaning but also warped. Before the 1990 restoration, the tower was 5.5 degrees out of plumb. Since the completion of that restoration in 2001, the lean has been approximately 3.99 degrees.[1][2] The overhang has been reduced from 4.5 meters to 3.9 meters. The tower is 15 meters wide."
It seems Aaron has to build a few stories, tilt a bit and then add a few more. and so on
We’ll see how he takes it on! Your approach is definitely the best one; I think it’d be fun to model at a slant the whole time (but then again, perhaps a huge headache as well)!
Aaron and I just realized this – it’s amazing how five years can pass and you forget what you’ve done! Regardless, this should be a good stream and we’ll see perhaps how Aaron approaches the tower differently this time around!
or you could use some lumber to tilt your chair and desk and model it straight. or make it square. or use another tower ? like the leaning tower of berlin?
