5D+ Plus - Automate the creation of Construction Drawings

Currently 5D+ can help user automatically assign IFC class to all objects has been tagged instead manually. This is done through a mapping rules are preset from Classifcations in Custom Settings, then auto re-structure model by nested groups with a hierarchy: Project > Site > Building > Building Storeys > Building Elements (follow IFC rules).

When 5D+ finishing the progess with Auto IFC button, the model is already to export to IFC format. User can go to menu File > Export > 3D Model > IFC formats … IFC 2x3 or IFC 4

The IFC model exported from 5D+ now can be import to Revit or IFC viewer and use as a normal IFC model, but it not contains the fully information for each object if you not feed info for it using extension like IFC Manager…, except the information about the geomertry.

But just that it. Currently 5D+ have not automatically handle more deeply with IFC property sets for each objects or not clone the SketchUp description of objects (if existing) to IFC desctiption.

These will come later and the main purpose for using 5D+ is automate tasks, not manually.

IFC is very flexible. Basically you can create an IFC file by simply classifying everything as IfcBuildgingElementProxy

Of course the purpose of doing that would be only about conveying building and model hiearchy to others in that format. Ifc is about describing a building and I just want to know how to describe certain elements better, so they can be integrated in BIM workflows in the future.

So, for me first comes the what, then the how. There are many ways to classify building elements in Sketchup.

Then there’s also the fact that this affects the name of scenes and 5D+ tags.

The way we manage that is setup here, but I can’t control it to result in very small names as P1 or P-1.

For ceilings I can’t setup names like PT-1 or PT1

No, the name of scenes is control by Custom Settings > Scenes > Go to each scene > Abbreviation.

Edited. I forgot you want the storey name can be shorten in scene name. There is no options for this. You have to change scene name manually your self.

Comments about the new classification feature:

  • still has weird bug with “make unique” and other right click context commands sometimes not working. Restart fixes it.

  • mouseover the overlay buttons cancels command in progress. In the example below I am using the Tape Measure tool. Is it possible to make this only happen when we click the overlay buttons or is that a limitation of overlays?

  • clicking on items in outline doesn’t activate the breadcrumb. It only activates the level above the object in the breadcrumb. We have to click on the object again in the model view to show it in the breadcrumb display.

This feature is amazing aside from a few very minor bugs that I’ve observed.

Yes, the only way to create Scenes with a simple name as P1 or P-1 is if I do it manually.

Otherwise I will have them named with some default I can’t control and I will also have underground plan scenes named the same as above ground plans.

The best I could come up with was this but the underground scenes have to be changed manually:

I also don’t quite like the fact that longitudinal sections and transversal sections need to be deferentiated if they look left, right, front and back. We talked about this before, but I think other customizations should be possible, along with diagonal sections. Maybe you can pull that off in the future. I hope so.

edit: I mistakenly posted this in Auto Info.

@Cyentruk Can you give me some tips on how to generate interior elevations? I’m having some trouble and the interior elevation interface on Curic Section causes Sketchup to crash. Is there a way to do it just through 5D+?

You can select object of the floor or the ceiling of interior space you want to create interior elevation, then use Auto Scene to create 4 Section scenes.

Because you selected objects first, so when an options box appears, please choose Details for type, and “No” for Hide rest Model.

You’ll get 4 interior elevations with 4 section planes go through the center of bounding box of the selected object.

I forgot to mention about the view of scenes will fit selected objetcs, so you should select both the floor and the ceiling to fit the views before creating scenes or use “Custom Bounds” fuction to adjust the views after creating scenes. @renton555

Thanks Cyentruk. I am pretty deep into learning about 5D so I am sure that I will have more questions later.

I wanted to quickly update you on the Classification bug.

As I said, it makes the right click context menu not work after using it for a while. So I can’t right click and go to “make group”, “make component”, or “make unique”. However, I can shortcut key and use “make group” or “make component” even when the bug his present.

However, “make unique” does not work at all, keyboard shortcut or otherwise. I thought that might give you a clue to the source of the bug.

Thank you for the clue, I 'll try to investigate to fix this bug.

Version 1.8.1

(Release date 2025.02.04)

  • Fixed an issue on Mac OS when pressing “Ctrl+Enter” does not work for Custom Bounds and Clipping Mask.
  • Fixed an issue on Mac OS causing a freeze when activating the Preview Paper feature.
  • Changed the action from “Ctrl+ Click” to “Double Click” to rename objects within the Objects Breadcrumb overlay.
  • Reorganized Other Tools in dialogs and menus.

@JQL now you can using “Double Click” to rename objects instead “Ctrl+Click”.

Thanks! You’re working hard to make us lazy people work less!

Honestly, this kind of small details make a huge difference in the workflow.

I’ll take this chance to ask if it would be possible to have an Auto IFC object classification method that wouldn’t change the hierarchy of objects?

I know that a correct hierarchy of objects is key but when we have several buildings or a difficult context that you don’t want to export to IFC, we have to organize the model differently. This still will work when exporting an IFC model, but auto IFC doesn’t allow that.

For that custom organization to work we have to be able to have a method that simply classify object by tag, but not how they are organized in the model. This could be an option, so not to ruin the process for anyone else.

That’s quite an easy task with a message box appear for asking if user want to auto nested groups follow IFC hierarchy or not before taking action.

That would be really awesome!

@cyentruk Did I explain this well?

When using the overlay, the selection tool will be used to select object. So, if you want to interact with the overlay, it will alway return to the selection tool of SketchUp.

So the intended workflow is to only turn on “classification” when selecting objects. Then turn off and do more modeling, right?

The main purpose of the Overlay is for “classifying objects” and watching it’s hierarchy by clicking to select them, so yes.

You may assign a shortcut key to easy switch ON/OFF this overlay.
