Welcome to our forums! Please introduce yourself :)

Hi there.
My name is Claire OÇonnell and I home school all three of my sons. My middle son, Ferdia, has ASD with a severe language delay but his visual spatial skills are good. So we started him on SketchUp earlier this year.
To date, he is self taught and creating some good buildings and scapes from his imagination. But I would like to get him involved in a “tutorial” to help ensure that he is learning in a thorough fashion, without “holes”. I have looked at your videos which are great and am going to start him on them, As language is a barrier for him, we will do it with the volume down and I will try to check if he is missing any of the info. So what I’m wondering is, are there any “lessons” or suggested “projects” which I give him to follow instructions to help him learn and where I can track his progress? I’m thinking that you may have some good suggestions for us rather than me trying to re-invent the wheel.
For your remaining questions above, I’ll answer as best I can here:

  • Industry = educating autistic teen with view to him being involved in architectural industry as an adult, he has a definite flair for 3D and building/design
  • Using SketchUp for educational project
  • His favorite thing would be creating buildings modeled on film\imaginary scenes, I can figure out some ways to show if you’d like…
  • Proficiency = beginner
  • Have not been to 3D Basecamp, would love instruction
  • Currently using SketchUp 2015, Pro version I believe, good computer/graphics card, will have to get my IT expert (= eldest son) to answer any questions on this…
  • Will set up a page for him this week to show models, perhaps a blog, or is there some method you would suggest/prefer?
  • He is proficient in Dysney Infinity, building complex movie scapes, may sound unimportant but it was his skill in that which led us to following this up with SketchUp and the idea of it leading into a profession.
  • Loves the beach…!

Hello all, My name is Jackhg, i am a newbie, an older newbie, always wanted to learn 3D type software, my mantra is to learn a new command or technique everyday, and use the command, make mistakes with the command, and incorporate that command in the next days drawing(s). There are really some very acomplished folks here, I have a lot to learn. Thanks for your time to read my hello and truly thank you for uploading your speciality in drawings, hope all of you have a great rest of 2015, that brings the best of everything to each of you.

Thanks in advance for helping me.

I am Don Butler, 82 years old and a retired technogeek.
My first computer (in a manner of speaking) was a Timex/Sinclair with a memory expansion board. Next stop was a Commodore VIC 20, then the venerable Commodore 64. After that I got serious.
Today I use the Intel i7, lots of memory and dual monitors. Since I’ve been out of the loop, as they say, all that isn’t very important now.
My current activities are photography and woodworking.
I seldom make anything in the workshop until I have modeled it in SU.
Dave R. is my favorite SU mentor.
As to proficiency, I’d say I’m on the first part of the curve without incentive to go higher.
And in reference to emojis. I don’t care for them although I see the occasional one that makes me laugh.

By way of introduction, I’m Jeff. I’ve used sketchup professionally to communicate design concepts, and for 3D printing. Previously, I was a mechanical and biomedical engineer, although now I’ve gotten into computer programming full-time. I’m hoping to learn to build plugins and extensions.

Hi. My name is Scott. I have used, or tried to use, SketchUp for a while. I seem to have to relearn everything because I put it down for too long between attempts. I use it to model wood projects. In one case I am trying to model a steel BBQ pit. But I have a specific need now so I am re-learning it. I came to this forum to find answers. As soon as I figure out where to post the question I will type my first post and see where it goes from there.

I don’t have a favorite emoji. I don’t know what it is. If your talking about the smiley face things, then I don’t have a favorite.

Hi! My name is Matt, I love sketchup much like all of you. I have a pretty impressive rig: 5 monitor array with dual GTX-670 graphics cards, 32gb of Ram, i7-3930k, 2 SSD drives in Raid-0 running Windows 10. I have used sketchup pretty diversely over the years and it has been my go to for anything my mind or someone else’ dreams up.

See you around!

I’m Michael Azer, a Structural Engineer and plug-ins developer.
I use Sketchup personally, except if I got a client who needs a plugin developed.
I love sketchup, because of its ease of use and extensibility.
I guess I’m an advanced user of Sketchup
I have never gone to a SketchUp 3DBasecamp
I use a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), with OSX Yosemite.
I’m currently building a website to sell sketchup extensions and stand-alone engineering software on. (http://www.autobuild.co)

Hello, This is DaveB. I am a product designer fairly new to SU and am very excited to learn and contribute in the SU community. I have an Industrial design background with an emphasis on ergonomics so hopefully I can assist anyone with questions on Human Factors and accessibility related questions.

I have dabbled in other 3D programs like Rhino and 3D studio max but am VERY enamored with the ease of use of SU and the seemingly endless possibilities for creativity and design.

I am very excited to be part of this community!

I consider myself an intermediate level self-taught user (no formal training but am considering it)

Currently I am working on a product to help aging and disabled users with limited leg use to gain freedom and mobility where before they were limited to a walker or wheelchair.

I enjoy using SU Pro 2015 (MAC) and discovering all the plugin apps that increase capabilities for design.

OK, Alex, Jayne here.
I’m old and I live in Washington, DC.
I have a BArch from UTenn from 1984.
I was bumped out of the profession a few yrs ago - so, I bought a PC and Sketchup. Want to learn Revit / SketchUp / something so that I can become re-employed.
I’m going to b asking a lot of sophomore level questions…If I don’t shoot myself in this process. A friend of mine calls me the Joe biden of technology.

Hi

I am Steve and very new to sketchup. I am a novice to sketchup and now way near any kind of wizard status. I have a masters degree in mechanical engineering but have always aspired to become an architect … sigh! I’m in the middle of renovating my second house … this one was built in 1860. I purchased Sketchup Pro 2015 to model the house and help me with the renovations. I know this is only scratching the surface of what sketchup can offer and I look forward to learning as I go. Maybe there is hope for wizard status somewhere down the road.

I lived in Hawaii for three years but prefer the changing seasons … as long as I can be close to a beach.

Hi,
I am Björn from Sweden.
I haven’t used Sketchup much at all but is dabbling a bit to see how it works and am trying to do a few things.

I work as a simultaneous interpreter and translator.

Right now I am trying to draw a small house I want to build on my property to use with family and friends visiting.

Wow, I’ve been using SketchUp for so long, and I’m just now getting into the community.

My name is Rich. I’m an energy engineer for a large group and I focus on energy savings performance contracts. Essentially, if someone is curious about conserving energy, I can show them how the cost savings will pay for the project. In fact, I guarantee it. If my numbers don’t meet or exceed the contracted amount, my company will write a check for every year specified in the project life cycle. My expertise is on roadway lighting, and I have a knack for the data collection part of projects.

I use SketchUp as a freelance designer and just for fun. The freelance stuff pays for my mountain bike parts, while the just for fun gives me time to relax and think a bit. I started modeling in “vanilla” AutoCAD. While I always played around in SU, I only started focusing on it the last year or so. I love how many hidden functions are in such a simple interface. SketchUp really is a package for both novices, experts, and - those like me - the ones in between.

Anyways, looking forward to participating in this community. Maybe a little learning & a little teaching…we’ll see where it lands me…

My name is Leander. I am a male professional, late 60’s, in southern California. I am learning Sketchup as part of a woodworking course at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA. My goals are to learn to design furniture, and separately, to model my house so my wife and I can discuss remodel ideas. I am also interested in drawing upgrade projects for a 35’ sailboat. (As some of you may know, a sailboat has almost no straight lines!).

Although I have purchased Sketchup Pro with my student ID before school started, I have learned that the 4 month class will be taught entirely in Sketchup Make, so I plan to avoid all Pro features during that period.

My previous efforts with Sketchup extend back over about 2 years. I have done about 4 of the Trimble tutorials and gone through part of a purchased “Sketchup for Woodworkers” DVD course at home. My current class meets 4 hours once per week and included substantial homework.

My name is Judy. I have a lot of experience as a software user, including ArcGIS, timeline editors, Photoshop and InDesign, etc. I never know everything about any software, but I learn enough to find it very useful (probably somewhere around 10% of what ArcGIS is capable of, maybe 80% for Photoshop.) Years ago I learned an industrial HP CAD system, way before there was anything 3D on the market. II made a macro that allowed me to automate the design of snowflakes. (I’m really an artist, not a techie.)

I’m looking for something quick and reasonably simple for 2D CAD - AUTOCAD is much more than I want, and a few other things I’ve tried are ridiculously buggy. This looks good, although it does seem to have some bugs (about which I have posted). Bujt I’m learning it pretty fast by my usual plunge-in-and-swim method.

I am almost 70 years old, and back in the 1960’s I was a programmer on IBM 360-65, but I prefer to be a heavy user of powerful tools.

This Forum is obviously very useful. Thanks!

SketchUp user since about 2005. I work in design (architecture and urban mostly) With all it’s problems, SketchUp appears to have a great future at the expense of many other tools and I look forward to the day I can use only it. Ok besides Rhino now and again
