This topic is kinda old. But I think it was worth posting this tip.
Short version: Try repairing your “Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable” install, either 2017 or 2015-2019 versions.
Long version:
I still use Sketchup Make 2017. Because:
- I rarely work on 3D stuff, mostly just when I plan house projects.
- I like the app toolbars and interface much better than the web version, and it is faster than the web version.
I also was having 2017 crash on startup, and it also indeed had to do with the C++ redistributables.
The bug splat came up and sent me to a website saying it was likely a redistributable issue, and pointed me to one to download. (a 2017 redistributable ver 14.11.25325.0).
I tried to install it but it failed, saying I already had a version that conflicts with this version installed.
After a few times, the bugsplat even stopped and it just failed to open silently when I clicked in “Start Sketchup”. I could still get Sketchup Make 2016 to open fine (it’s still installed) but most of my files are Sketchup 2017 now… so that didn’t help.
So what I had installed on my machine (Windows 10 pro) is this:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable (x64) - 14.24.28127.4
Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable (x86) - 14.27.19016.0
I decided I’d take my chances and uninstall them and install the one the debug pointed me to (2017 14.11.25325.0)… but when I went to uninstall the x64 version, the installer, instead of just uninstalling the redistributable, offered a “repair” option. I figured I’d give it a try.
So I repaired that, and also right clicked on the x86 redistributable, clicked “uninstall” then selected the “repair” option for that too.
Guess what… it WORKED! Now Sketchup Make 2017 opens up again without crashing. Tried it with a few files, and I was able to open and edit them.
