Bummer, I had the same problem and I didn’t realize that when you upgrade to 2017 you can’t authorize a new machine to run 2016. You can put Sketchup Make 2016 on the laptop.

Single User Licenses: You can keep using SketchUp Pro 2016 on any machines you’ve already authorized, but you won’t be able to use the 2016 license to authorize any new machines.
