Welcome to our forums! Please introduce yourself :)

I am an intermediate user of SketchUp living in rural western Colorado rand have found it really useful in design/building of custom homes. Formerly I did construction drawings in Vectorworks, but am now trying to become familiar with LayOut and see if that will work for residential construction projects.
I like SketchUp because its interface is more like a box of crayons than the cockpit of a 747, yet it has a surprising depth in function.

Who are you, who, who? I am Kevin. I am 65 and retired in Alabama.

What is your industry and profession? I am “a jack of all trades and master of none.”

Where do you use SketchUp? At home for personal use.

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it? I started using SketchUp with Version 7 to plan renovations and a remodel of my home, as well as some woodworking projects. My favorite thing is that it’s so much easier to use than any other 3D software I have tried.

How proficient are you in SketchUp? I guess I am a Beginner for the most part, but intermediate in some regards.

What is your current set up? I have an Acer Aspire 6920 laptop, running Windows Vista and SketchUp Make 2014 (2015 won’t run under Vista.

Do you have a 3DW page with your models, Extensions, or a website you would like to link to or show off to us? Not yet.

Anything else you would like to tell us? I’m nearing the end of a total basement remodel which I have 7 SketchUp models for, each one teaching me something new. I am also modeling (or learning to model) several different woodworking projects.

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…? Whenever I can; long drive away.

I have been told to load and learn Sketchup for a possible resource for the Comp-Prog class.
I have some questions.

Hi. My name is Bud Latta. I’m a professional engineer in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Retiring soon, and expect to have more time to fool around with my computers and gadgets. I have spent some time with AutoCad but never to point of being proficient. I downloaded the trial version of SketchUp Pro and have been trying to get a handle on it, with goal of deciding if I would pay for a license and make it my “go to” design/modelling program. Not there yet.

Hello there,
My name is Santos Carrion. I’m from Puerto Rico. And yes, since I live on a tropical Caribbean island, I do go to the beach,… all year around mind you. Oh yea, I think of myself as a Caribbean Pirate, but only when drunk on,…you guessed it,…rum. (Just Kidding  )

I make myself a living doing a few odd jobs from home like computer repair, website development and online selling. I am also a U.S. Navy veteran. After about 6 or 7 years of not practicing some 3d modeling, I recently started again with Sketchup. I am strictly just on a personal level using Sketchup, I am a somewhat of a noob at 3d modeling, though I do have so far some very basic Sketchup modeling skills.

When ever I model with Sketchup, I like doing mainly architectural stuff, like buildings, houses and such. Sketchup is my favorite modeler to use, due to the fact it is very easy to learn and use. I just use the freeware version of Sketchup, it’s all I need for now. One area I really started getting in to since it falls within website development, is WebGL.

But also in particular, X3DOM. I have already published a working X3DOM 3d site which was originally modeled with Sketchup as an example test. As my first regular forum post after this one, I will see if I can put a easy to follow Sketchup to X3DOM tutorial on this forum. Well, that’s it for now, until later…

Hello Sketchup peoples, my name is Alex. I’m 26 years old from MN, I have a degree in Microbiology and unfortunately no interest in Microbiology :frowning: After graduating, I started gaining new interests at a seemingly exponential rate- computer programming, woodworking, dance music production… I’m all over the board however lately I’ve been settling more on programming as an actual career choice. I started using Sketchup when I began dj’ing weddings a while back. I wanted to custom build the ultimate mobile dj station/desk/setup but now its 3 years in the making and I still haven’t built the ■■■■ thing. I’ve got about a hundred different versions saved of it but I’m still trying to get that perfect balance of weight, visual appeal, portability, versatility, stability etc… I’ve pretty much used this project as a way to teach myself SketchUp but have also used the software for some construction work as well. I love it because the more I learn how to use it the more I feel that gain of creative power! I’m likely going to pursue an education in computer programming starting in the fall and will try to keep working with sketchup as I go. I’m really looking forward to integrating that the two together. I figure if I can learn to program well enough to be able to organize and control my digital world, maybe I can add SketchUp to the mix in order to fulfill my more “physical world” aspirations as well

Hi Forum,
I’m Tim, been using Sketchup about ten years. I taught it at Columbia University for about six years and now teach it at ASU. I use it for architecture in Arizona. I’m probably advanced in some things.
I like that SketchUp is free and easy to learn. My 11 yr old daughter has professionally built models for other architects.
Cheers,
Tim

I am Patrick an Architect in Connecticut USA. I use SketchUp 2015 professionally as a design tool, & for rendering. I have only been using it for a few months, & only beginning to get familiar with it, but see its amazing potential. I have a lot to learn.

I’m a semi-retired architect that had taken the opportunity of the 2008 meltdown to sit back, relocate to near my grand children and spend time with them and reorient myself all around. I was quite active with AutoCAD up til then, since 1990, mostly in Hawaii. Did everything in 3D modeling, and worked out a system to use the models directly in documents, including construction, permit, shop drawings, etc. Now, getting back into things and liking Sketchup. It does things sort of how I did with AutoCAD but the modeling is much easier in some ways, though maybe not as fascile in terms of really complex models. Then again, I’m just learning. Haven’t started using it commercially, but it’s loads of fun to play with while I’m learning.

What is your industry and profession? I am A Landscape Designer

Where do you use SketchUp? I use sketch-up for about 6 hours per day or more at work and for home projects designing my house etc

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it? I was always dead set against the uncreative nature of Cad and sketchup changed my opinions completely. Once you master it you have more capabilities of being creative and it suites my design style.

How proficient are you in SketchUp? I would say pretty accomplished my models may not be ultra clean but I have produced a very efficiant and quick way of working.

Do you have a 3DW page with your models, or a website you would like to link to or show off to us? all my Models get rendered and filmed and put onto Vimeo/ Youtube I-Echo Landscape Design http://i-echo.london/

What is your favorite Emoji? Rolling eyes
Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…? oh Yes I love a stormy sea

I’m old. REALLY, REALLY, OLD!

Worked for 30 years in mining, oil and gas and commercial structural design; trained as a naval architect but changed course early on. Didn’t care for job security (aka company-owned) so went self-employed as independent contractor.
Emigrated from UK to NZ for 7 years, then OZ for 25, then Norway and Netherlands, Turkey, Thailand & a few other spots.

Hardware? Forced to use Windows PC because no CAD vendor supported Mac OSX [AFAIK]. Otherwise prefer MacBook Air.

Long retired, my tool of choice was Microstation, also (under protest!) Auotocad and a tiny bit of SolidWorks. My licences are long expired so I tried ‘SU Make’.
As I see it this free version is well and good but hamstrung in not having proper solid modelling tools but that’s fair enough, pay for the ‘Professional’ version…

Perhaps I have it all wrong, or my prior ways of doing things strangled my attempts at using SketchUp? Anyway it is impossible for me to assess my capabilities from the strictures of this free version. Obviously from other users’ work it is capable of great things but… you know… old dogs, new tricks…

“Absolute beginner” is flattering myself. Having to ‘Select’ graphics before every action seems so outdated- is it so in the Pro version?
Same with graphic elements sticking together, having to make ‘Components’ so they act individually is very strange. Why would unrelated items ‘stick’ as the default behaviour? Yep, very hard to drop the old ways!

Who are you, who, who? (show us those pearly whites smiley )
I’m Gadget.

What is your industry and profession?
Architectural home improvements; extensions, conservatories, sun-rooms, re-modelling…
Sometimes working with clients to find solutions within a budget, sometimes creating presentations for other people’s solutions.

Where do you use SketchUp? Personally/professionally?
Sometimes used at work for clients that can’t ‘see’ normal 2D architectural plans, used at home as a way to doodle and practice creativity and find solutions to architectural spaces.

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it? (Besides using it to impress the babes…)
I have used many 3d packages from simplistic line drawings to high performance, all singing, all dancing packages. Most require training and knowledge of the inner workings/commands/nuances. SU is really intuitive, stable (or at least recovers very well from crashes), has a great component library to ‘dress’ a model, is really easy to navigate and can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.

How proficient are you in SketchUp? Beginner, intermediate, advanced?
Probably ‘advanced’, but still learning how to do stuff.

What is your current set up? Computer type, SketchUp version…etc. (Your lake house and Ferrari don’t count)
HP Envy laptop running SU15

Do you have a 3DW page with your models, Extensions, or a website you would like to link to or show off to us?
Yes; Gadget B. | 3D Warehouse (… need to upload some more models…)

Anything else you would like to tell us? (e.g., you once saw a UFO & tried to model it in SketchUp to get a prototype 3D printed…)
I can use just about any drawing package - pixels or vector. I have used 3D images to generate presentations for clients for as long as CAD could generate 3D images. I am used to developing software solutions; finding ways that software can be more efficient, better laid out, easier to use and find information, and as idiot proof as I can make them. I’m always trying to find a different (/slicker) way to do something.

What is your favorite Emoji?
:tophat:

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…?
yup.

Hello Sketchup Community, I am Arnfinn Rian, a relatively new and definitely amateur user of Sketchup.
As of today I am not employed as a SU user but I have been looking for work as a CAD operator/designer on and off for a couple of years now. In Norway they aren’t really that many opportunities in the creative businesses.

I discovered Sketchup when I was studying 3D drawing in 2010 with Autocad and this program completely took me by my heart. I love how it is intuitive, easy to work, and that you never use the term “workaround” as you have to in AutoCAD and Blender.

By now I am probably little more than intermediate, but I am not a member of any social network where I can compare my work.

I work on a PC, Win7, 4GB Ram, double monitors and Logitech Anywhere MX cordless mouse. After Sketchup I discovered the value of a good mouse.

This is my 3Dwarehouse. please feel free to rate, rant and like if you feel for it.

Who’s Emoji?

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…Sure I fish all the time.

I’m 46, likeable, redhead, redbeard, I smile easily and don’t really know what else to say.
